The Museum as a collection
The Museum collects different items which characterize its peculiarity.
It aims not only at keeping and protecting its heritage, but at being
regarded as an educational place, where history ,told by several objects, becomes a
means of working out and developing critical thinking.
Introduction to the Museum
The Historic Museum of the Permanent Fortification
of the Straits of Messina, located in Forte Cavalli, carried out by the
Documentation and Study Centre "Forte Cavalli" in collaboration with
the Bonino-Pulejo foundation and the Department of Culture, Tourism and
Entertainment by the Municipality of MESSINA, was opened on 11 May 2003.
The route of the iconographic Museum of Forte Cavalli starts from the important
balistic studies carried out by general Piedmontese Giovanni Cavalli (whom the fort
is named after) inventor of the rifling of cannons, which allowed European countries
to improve their armaments and revolutionize siege strategies, used up to the time.
In the rooms of the fort, the history of fort building of the late '800 and the defence
of the Straits of Messina are told by iconographic tables, objects and wartime finds
ranging from the post-unitarian period to the First World War.
The Museum offers the opportunity to know a forgotten part of the history of Messina
and ,above all, young people have the possibility to find an evidence about the history
studied on books, by means of films by "Istituto Luce", air-bombs fallen in
town and ration-cards needed to get bread and soup during the Second World War. Today,
more than ever, new generations need to know the past, a time told by their grandfathers
(eyewitnesses who can convey emotions felt by themselves), in order to avoid the risk
of getting used to wars suffered by other people and heard on television-news, bringing
about habit and indifference.
The Peace Laboratory
An educational path for students to reflect on the tolerance and collaboration
between nations and to avoid the risk that these wars suffered by others and known
to us through the news, in time creates a sense of habit and indifference.
"The young, not having a past, look at the future
the old, not having a future, look at the past"
To live the present we need to know what it is; since the present comes from afar
we need to understand faraway days to understand nowadays. So History is actually
found out to be the science of the present , or even better, the science of
the future.
As a matter of fact, what is the aim of the present but for building
the future?
Someone said "Who doesn't remember History risks to become a
victim of it", unfortunately repeating evil deeds. Therefore the memory of our past
is an integral part of the History of our country, Italy. The knowledge of our
origins, our past, our present and what our future might be , means culture too.
Thence the idea to let people know, through the Historic Museum of
Forte Cavalli, what war left as a mark in the town of Messina, so that old
people's sad memories, unarmed victims of a terrible destiny, can keep on
living among young people.
